Barrie House Coffee Announces CEO Transition

Scott Montgomery

ELMSFORD, NY (January 9, 2024) – Barrie House Coffee Roasters today announced that the Board of Directors (board) has appointed Scott Montgomery, the company's Chief Sales Officer (CSO) as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Craig M. James. James has stepped down as CEO effective January 1, 2024. To support the transition, James will serve as Chairman of the board.

Montgomery has served as Barrie House CSO since July 2022. He has an extensive career spanning retail and wholesale within the fashion accessories, consumer products and small domestic appliance industries. He worked as Senior Vice President of Sales at Coravin, the premier global wine technology company serving consumers and on-premise channels, and as Vice President of B2C Commercial at Nespresso USA, a leading manufacturer of single-serve coffees, espressos, and equipment for retail, foodservice, and consumers.

“It is with tremendous enthusiasm that I embrace the opportunity to lead Barrie House Coffee Company as we approach the celebration of our 90th Anniversary in business,” said Montgomery. “I am humbled by the confidence and faith that Craig James and the Board of Directors have bestowed upon me to drive the next phase of the company’s growth. Craig joined almost 6 years ago as CEO after 23 years with ExxonMobil. He was the first non-family member to serve as CEO. With his strong corporate background, he firmly established a corporate culture, structure and discipline into a family business that today allows us to operate and compete at the highest levels providing our loyal customers with a frictionless, consultative experience, delivering only the highest quality products and services to our customers every day. Craig and I work seamlessly together, so knowing that we will continue to do so as he serves as Chairman of the board will enable us to execute on many exciting new opportunities in the future.”

“I would like to recognize the significant contributions that Craig brought to Barrie House during his tenure,” said Barry Goldstein, Barrie House owner and President of the board. “Since my grandfather founded this company in 1934, we successfully operated as a proud family-run business. But I recognized that to take the company to the next level in today’s highly competitive environment, the time had come to seek external leadership. Craig did an exceptional job establishing an infrastructure to support our growth while instilling a culture based on an unwavering commitment to quality and a foundation of continuous excellence in everything we do, all the while never losing the sense of family in the business. His impact will be felt for years to come and I am very pleased to step aside and elect Craig as Chairman of the board. One of Craig’s key impacts was the hiring of Scott Montgomery as our Chief Sales Officer. Strengthening our Leadership Team by adding a CSO who brings large corporate as well as start-up experience has proven invaluable to Barrie House. He strategically builds incredibly strong partnerships with our customers and demonstrates strong fiscal discipline and critical innovative solutions to overcome challenges. The board and I have complete confidence in Scott’s ability to steer Barrie House through its next phase of growth.”
